Sensitivity coefficients relating to the oscillatory stability of the equations for simplified automobile-trailer combinations are defined and calculated. These coefficients show that variations in the automobile’s parameters have very little influence on a stable combination, but their influence on a combination which is on the verge of instability is just as important as the parameters of the trailer. The sensitivity coefficients give a quantitative indication of the importance of parameter changes made in attempting to improve the characteristics of a vehicle.
