The idea that the order of a given model of a physical system is equal to the number of independent energy storage elements is often correct if all types of dependence are taken into account. However, the choice of output variables also affects the minimum order required. An example is given which is 4th, 3rd, or 2nd order depending upon which physical variables are required as output variables.
